The 2024 Herald Nelson Mandela University Citizens of the Year awards shone a light on the quiet champions of Nelson Mandela Bay—those working tirelessly in education, environment, health, civil society, business, sports, and the arts. These are the unsung heroes whose daily efforts ripple far beyond themselves.
Among the words that framed the evening was a timeless African proverb:
“If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.”
This wisdom reminds us that progress in its truest form is not about rushing ahead, but about nurturing shared purpose. When we walk the road together, we carry not just our own dreams, but the resilience, strength, and vision of a community.
FOVS and the Power of Partnerships
In the Innovation and Sustainability category, we are deeply proud that Dominick Marshall-Smith, one of our Directors at Friends of Van Stadens (FOVS), received this honour. His recognition reflects more than personal achievement—it speaks to the spirit of collective conservation that underpins our work.

Under Dom’s guidance, FOVS has grown into a space where conservation is not separate from people, but deeply woven into community life. His vision has:
- Brought together diverse partners who share a commitment to protecting biodiversity.
- Strengthened friendships that carry projects beyond short-term goals.
- Inspired a culture of collaboration where every contribution, big or small, has lasting impact.
Conservation Rooted in Community
At FOVS, we believe protecting our natural heritage is not only about safeguarding landscapes—it’s also about creating opportunities for those who live alongside them. Every trail cleared, plant nurtured, and story shared at the Reserve is part of a larger journey: one where conservation and community thrive side by side.
This award celebrates all of us—the volunteers, interns, staff, partners, and supporters—who walk this road together. It is proof that when we stand united for nature, we do more than preserve—it allows us to grow, to inspire, and to ensure a living legacy for generations to come.

Because lasting change, like a wildflower seed carried by the wind, never grows in isolation. It blooms when nurtured by many hands, rooted in shared purpose, and lifted by the strength of togetherness.
