FOVS is proud to be part of an innovative initiative addressing two critical challenges in Nelson Mandela Bay — youth unemployment and environmental degradation. The Youth Employment Service (YES) Programme, launched by the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, funded by Hollard Insurance, and delivered in partnership with Youth@Work, creates meaningful opportunities for young people while investing in the long-term health of our ecosystems.
Through this initiative, FOVS has welcomed three new interns into our Conservation Internship Programme (CIP), joining our existing four. This brings our team to seven interns, all from the neighbouring local community, who will gain practical experience in conservation while contributing directly to ecological resilience in the Metro.
Their training and work at the Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve will focus on:
- Indigenous plant conservation and nursery management
- Trail maintenance to support safe and sustainable eco-tourism
- Fire management protocols for biodiversity protection
- Invasive alien plant removal, a key step in restoring indigenous habitats
- Environmental education and awareness, strengthening community engagement
This combination of skills development and practical conservation action ensures that interns are not only prepared for future careers in the environmental sector but are also actively contributing to the protection and restoration of our natural heritage.
